9. Sin Cara
WWE.comThis one probably deserves an asterisk, as well. The masked Luchador gimmick is one that doesn't always translate well to the American audiences, but they still carry plenty of mystique behind them. When WWE signed Mistico in 2011, it was viewed as a major coup, because many viewed him as the best high-flier in all of wrestling and the successor to Rey Mysterio for the love and support of the ever-growing Latino viewing demographic. His debut was flashy and all, but there was one problem... coming straight from Mexico and bypassing NXT entirely, there was a tremendous language barrier between him and his opponents. They weren't able to communicate during matches, and that led to botch... after botch... after botch... after botch. Those botches would eventually lead to injuries, and that's when the wheels fell off of the Sin Cara bandwagon altogether. He eventually had to face Alberto Del Rio on nearly every WWE television show for weeks on end, just to get him in matches with someone that can speak and understand Spanish. He went from being one of the next big things to being viewed as nothing more than a joke, impossible to take seriously as he wrestled under stupid custom lighting that probably made it even more difficult for him to see out of his mask. It should have been something special to watch his career evolve, but it was blown on someone who wasn't ready, made worse by management decisions that forced him to have no choice.
