10 Baffling WWE Creative Ideas Fans Still Can't Work Out
9. "WCW" Invasion
Buying out his main competition in 2001, Vince McMahon's purchase of WCW was a shocking moment in the history of pro wrestling, and WWE have never again been pushed quite as far by any wrestling company as they were by the Atlanta-based promotion. In buying out his main rival, McMahon promised to keep the WCW name afloat, and there were serious talks about relaunching the company separately from WWE. By having two successful promotions running in tandem, Vince theorised that he'd have twice the money, and better yet, he could manipulate storylines for one or two big 'Us vs. Them' Pay-Per-Views each year, which were sure to be box office hits. Of course, things didn't turn out that way, as McMahon neglected to buy out the contracts of a lot of top WCW stars, leaving him with only a few headline names. To remedy this, the likes of Steve Austin, Stephanie and Shane McMahon, and even Kurt Angle were placed on the WCW side, leading to a big "WCW" vs. WWF showdown at the Survivor Series 2001. Fans weren't fooled, as this apparent invasion came down to The Rock vs. Steve Austin, who had both been top WWE stars throughout the Monday Night Wars.
