10 Baffling WWE Creative Ideas Fans Still Can't Work Out
8. The Coronation Of A Crappy King
Classic King Of The Ring moments include Bret Hart overcoming the odds, defeating the dangerous Bam Bam Bigelow in 1993, and Steve Austin's infamous promo which led to the birth of 'Austin 3:16' in 1996, one of the most well-remembered catchphrases in wrestling history. The King Of The Ring show is largely much-missed, but try telling that to fans who paid money to see the 1995 version of the event. Desperately thin on the ground for main event level talent, the creative braintrust decided that the 'King' moniker could make anybody a star, and thrust Mabel, who had previously been a comedy tag wrestler, into the spotlight. Fans were upset enough that genuine top names such as Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker were eliminated from the brackets in the early rounds, but enough was enough by the time Mabel won the entire tournament, going on to face WWF Champion Diesel at Summerslam just months later. This was a case of the writing staff being short on ideas, and terribly misreading what their audience wanted to see.
