10 Behind The Scenes Stories About Kevin Owens You Should Know
4. Vince McMahon Chewed Out Owens Backstage At WrestleMania 33
Kevin Owens' run as Universal Champion received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, but the saving grace of the entire reign was Owens' on-screen friendship with Chris Jericho. Their on-screen chemistry and comedic timing helped the storyline a lot, and the fans loved to have them on their screens despite WWE fumbling in booking Owens in decent matches.
It was evident from the beginning that one of them would betray the other at the end, and the Festival of Friendship segment turned out to be the moment Kevin Owens turned on Jericho. The friendship turned into a bitter rivalry, which resulted in Jericho defending the United States Championship against Owens at WrestleMania 33.
The match wasn't exactly five stars, but the two had a decent outing in a 16-minute contest that saw Owens defeat Jericho to become the new champion. However, Jericho recalled during an interview that Vince McMahon was not happy with Owens' performance in the match. When the latter went backstage, McMahon chewed him out - as seen on KO's 365 Network special - and said that was the worst match in WrestleMania history.
However, when Jericho walked through the curtains, McMahon gave him a thumbs up. Jericho deduced that McMahon might've been on Owens' case because he felt he needed to lose some extra weight or was unhappy with his work as a heel. The match was not anywhere close to being the worst in WrestleMania history, but it looks like McMahon was just trying to make a point to Owens that he needed to improve his game.
