Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant at WrestleMania 3 is one of the most iconic matches in wrestling history. It’s a spectacle that may never be duplicated. But from a pure technical standpoint, it was pretty terrible.

At that point in his career, Andre was largely immobile. His enormous size had taken its toll on his body, with his back barely able to handle the workload of a tag bout, let alone a singles match. However, as much as the company hyped it up as their first time facing each other, Hogan and Andre had actually battled each other many times before Vincent K. McMahon took over the company from his dad. Before that, the roles were reversed with Hogan as the cocky heel (with legendary manager Freddie Blassie at his side), and Andre as the larger-than-life babyface figure.

In 1980 at Showdown at Shea, the two titans met up in front of a huge crowd and it was pretty impressive. The match still largely consisted of punches, and simple submissions but there was an athleticism to it all that was missing years later. Andre even busted out a pair of splashes! Post-bout, Hogan opened up his opponent and made him bleed from the forehead before running off like a coward. It was a great visual to cap off the monstrous match.

Plus, there’s nothing quite like watching Andre’s wild afro in its prime, and Hogan with a decent amount of head on his hair as well.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
