The main event of WrestleMania XI will go down as a pure spectacle, not the first time that a non-wrestler was in the main event spot, but one which divided critics as Bam Bam Bigelow - one of the most well respected big man superstars - faced off against one of the NFL’s top names, Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants.

The feud between the two began at the Royal Rumble that year where Taylor was present in the front row. After Bigelow lost his match to the 1-2-3 Kid, ‘L.T.’ was seen arguing with Bigelow at ringside and then ended up on the floor as the Asbury Park native shoved the fearsome linebacker to the floor. The challenge was quickly laid down and the road to WrestleMania hit the mainstream press as planned. The WWF at the time was going through a strange period. Deep in the New Generation era, WCW was beginning to gain some ground and already had taken Hulk Hogan and Macho Man over to Atlanta.

Interest was waning in WWF/E and this was seen as a way to get more eyes on the product who may not have tried it before. The match itself wasn’t bad, featuring a pre-match concert from Salt’n’Pepa - and featuring an appearance from future WCW star Steve McMichael - yet it failed to impress audiences and critics, especially those who felt Shawn and Diesel’s title match should have been the main event.
