10 Best Champion Vs. Champion Matches In WWE History
7. Rob Van Dam (Intercontinental) Vs. Jeff Hardy (European)
Rob Van Dam and Jeff Hardy in a ladder match. Need we say more?
On the 20 July 2002 episode of Raw, Intercontinental Champion, Van Dam, and European Champion, Hardy, had a ladder match to unify both belts. In the aftermath of the Invasion angle, WWE had too many belts, so unification matches like this were common.
Not that it stopped them producing a million more belts over the next two decades.
Hardy and RVD are two wrestlers made to be in ladder matches. High-flying, death-defying, risk-taking, they are everything a ladder stipulation needs and this night proved that in excess.
This match is a must-match for fans of either performer - or indeed fans of gratuitous, ladder-based violence - and it ended with Van Dam picking up the W and both belts in the process.
The bout would have been good anyway, but the added stipulation of title unification added another layer of story to what was already a fun match to watch.
The European title was retired afterwards and hasn't been seen since. The Intercontinental Championship has been seen on a regular basis, although many fans wish it wasn't, especially during the reigns of Big Show, Ryback, and Ezekiel Jackson.
