10 Best Champions Of The Worst Titles In Wrestling
2. Bobo Brazil - World Negro Heavyweight Title
It was a different time, we know...but still. In the American south, Bobo Brazil was the most notable holder of the "World Negro Heavyweight" championship. It is unclear if this was an official title or if there was any belt involved, but Brazil was one of a few African-American wrestlers of his time to have been billed as the "World Negro Heavyweight" champ at some point in their careers. In those days, wrestling was broken up into different territories. Someone who was billed as "World champion" was considered the champion of many territories. To have a World Champion billed to appear in a specific territory meant drawing big crowds, and thus, big money. Unlike modern promotions who label their own top guy as "World Champion", Bobo Brazil was the "World Negro Heavyweight Champion" because he was the top African American wrestler in the territories. The same was happening in boxing at this time in the Unites States. Fortunately, Brazil was able to transcend the racial segregation of the time. He was considered, by many, the "Jackie Robinson" of wrestling and went on to hold many prestigious titles. In 1994, Bobo Brazil was inducted, by his old foe Ernie Ladd, into the WWE Hall of Fame. Bobo Brazil wasn't just the best to hold a bad title. He was one of the best, period.
