Even after turning himself into a legitimate singles competitor and snatching the Intercontinental Championship away from Triple H, Jeff Hardy just didn't look convincing going up against the top names in the company. He needed to prove he could truly hang with the big boys.

And in 2002, there was no one bigger or badder for Hardy to earn his stripes against than The Undertaker, who was in the midst of a cold-blooded heel run as Big Evil.

The match itself was a curious blend of Jeff's high-risk sensibilities and The Undertaker's punishing dissections. For much of this confrontation, Undertaker set out to prove what he'd already told this "young punk" the week before, that he wouldn't be able to walk out of the arena by the time it was all said and done.

Any time it looked like Jeff was starting to mount a quick onslaught, Taker came back with his own vicious brand of offense. Yet somehow, some way, Hardy found himself within a pinky finger's reach of obtaining the Undisputed Championship. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be, and Taker eventually destroyed the kid.

And he continued to do so even after the match was over, pummeling him some more and giving him an extra Last Ride for good measure. Even after all that, though, Hardy managed to get back to his feat, with an astonished Undertaker showing his respect to the crazy sumbitch that was somehow still standing.

And that put Jeff Hardy into the main event picture.

Because the ref raising your hand doesn't make you famous. The Undertaker raising your hand makes you famous.
