Now we go back to the time that Shinsuke Nakamura was a world title contender, which seems like eons ago.

Some fans were deeply disappointed when Nakamura debuted on the main roster and didn’t immediately vault to a world title feud, but when he won the Royal Rumble in 2018, many figured it was just WWE’s usual way of inexplicably cooling someone off and then heating them back up later.

But then, Shin came up short against AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 34. The big story here though came afterward, when Nakamura presented the title to his friend… and then low-blowed him, turning heel.

Naturally, this set up a rematch with different dynamics… at Greatest Royal Rumble. Yep, we had a speedbump along the way. That match ended in a double countout, setting up another rematch a week later at Backlash. That match also ended inconclusively. Despite being a no-DQ match, Styles and Nakamura repeatedly low-blowed each other to the point that neither could answer the referee’s 10-count. Yes, that’s a thing that actually happened.

Amazingly, what should have been a feud of the year limped to a conclusion at Money in the Bank when Styles retained the title in a Last Man Standing match.
