10 Best Ever WrestleMania Rematches At Backlash

Ah, yes, the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever.” Except it wasn’t.

Edge had made his triumphant return to WWE at Royal Rumble 2020, shocking the wrestling world. A few weeks later, he was sidelined when Randy Orton laid him out with a steel chair assault, setting up the grudge match at WrestleMania 36.

This also had the unfortunate distinction of being just weeks into the pandemic, so what should have been a tremendous one-on-one match was turned into an empty arena Last Man Standing match that was a dull, plodding 35-minute affair that was a disappointment on almost every level.

They decided to run the match back at Backlash two months later, but with the aforementioned tagline. It set lofty expectations that could never be met. The two had a really good match – though it’s difficult to accurately judge the bout since it was pre-recorded and several parts were re-filmed. In fact, Edge injured himself during one of the reshoots, landing on the shelf for the rest of 2020. Orton won the bout, which ran even longer than the previous contest.

We should note that Backlash 2020 actually didn’t directly follow WrestleMania 36 that year. Money in the Bank was sandwiched between the two PPVs, but if we’re going to be true to this list, this was a Mania rematch at Backlash, so it counts.
