10 Best Heel Turns Of The WWE Attitude Era
2. Vince McMahon (1997)
Vince McMahon wasn't born a heel. He turned just like everyone else.
While WWE was on course for its historical re-branding, the chairman himself ensured that he'd remain the epicentre during its transition. First order of business: Step up from the commentary box and declare yourself the boss... in character.
Whilst Bret Hart was enveloping Mr McMahon in his own iconic heel-turn, the CEO was brewing up something far longer-lasting. Cue the Montreal Screw Job, and one of the most surreal and industry-changing blends of reality and fiction in wrestling history. Hitman's departure led to the genesis of the Austin-McMahon feud, and the rest folks... you know.
Fun fact; tyrannical authority figures in wrestling storytelling were not always a prerequisite. Though given the impact and influence of Vince's turn, you'd be forgiven for thinking different. Vince and his corporation went on shatter convention and revolutionise anti-hero narratives across the board. Just like that, The Attitude Era was born, WWE was saved, and the competition eventually dwindled and found itself swallowed whole.
It wasn't always perfect, but the concept and its origins can never be understated.
