2. The Sandman

As unthinkable as it is to even imagine now, there was a time when The Sandman was a beach bum in ECW. The archetypal 'Extreme' character, Sandman epitomised everything people loved about the company in his prime. Smoking and drinking on his way to the ring, Sandman was a super-charged, super-violent kind of guy.

That wasn't always the case, until Tod Gordon suggested Jim Fullington put more of himself into his on screen performances Sandman was a colourful joke. Tanned and wearing bright colours, the guy wasn't being true to his real-life self with such a gimmick.

In 1994, things started to change. Dressed in baggy zubaz or jeans, The Sandman even lit cigarettes during matches. Also enjoying the fact he came to the ring to Metallica's anthem 'Enter Sandman', ECW fans were able to identify with this Sandman.

Even now, The Sandman is one name that will always come up when people reminisce about the original ECW. It's difficult to envision that being the case had he not undergone a serious makeover in the mid-1990's.
