Chris Jericho's first major break under WCW contract actually came in New Japan Pro Wrestling, with whom WCW were sharing talent at the time. Y2J debuted as Super Liger, the masked nemesis of Jushin 'Thunder' Liger. He struggled to see through the eyeholes of the elaborate mask and botched numerous moves in his debut match at Wrestling World 1997, and the gimmick was almost immediately dropped. Thankfully, upon returning to WCW, Jericho was allowed to become the egotistical jerk we all know and love today. He wore t-shirts bearing the slogan "WCW Monday Jericho" and embarked upon a series of comedic skits, including his Spinal Tap-esque failure to find the arena entrance and hilarious "man of 1004 holds" promo (in which he listed every single submission manoeuvre in his arsenal, several of which were an armbar).
