10 Best IMPACT Wrestling Matches Of The Empty Arena Era
7. Ace Austin Vs. Wentz (IMPACT Wrestling, 2 June 2020)
A forgotten gem, this one. IMPACT Wrestling's 2 June 2020 broadcast featured the finals of a tournament to crown Tessa Blanchard's Slammiversary challenger, with Wentz replacing Trey Miguel, who'd been ambushed backstage. The ending was inevitable, of course, but the now-Nash Carter left the match with the aura of a superstar rather than just another guy on the roster.
He used his initiative here with an array of unique spots - a handspring knee smash immediately comes to mind - that kept Ace on his toes, while also ensuring the smooth flow of the match throughout. Here, the Rascalz member didn't need to win; he merely needed to thrive alongside a recognisable company face.
Austin was great, too, with his consistent innovation making for an entertaining clash of styles opposite Wentz. A Black Mass which caught Wentz as he hopped off the ringside steps was executed immaculately, with Ace's running Blockbuster - dubbed the Fold - seeing 'The One True Ace' advancing to last year's Slammiversary pay-per-view.
The bout delivered on what it set out to achieve, while simultaneously acting as a way to boost the perception of Wentz - and, in association, Dez - in his final few months in IMPACT. Without this match, you can rule out those tag title clashes with the Motor City Machine Guns as bangers, too.
