The comparative 'demotion' of Bryan and John Cena to the Intercontinental and United States Championships respectively was a designed plan to re-establish each belt's heritage with a proven champion.

While Cena and his US Open Challenge became a highlight of a down-year 2015, Bryan would find himself sidelined for good not long after winning the IC title. He did manage to get this glorious match in before it all disintegrated.

Ziggler as Bryan's first, and functionally his last, challenger made for the expected top-flight showing. Perhaps the most brilliant spot was Ziggler teasing a win following a standard superkick, which the post-Mania crowd in San Jose was buying as the finish.

Bryan ultimately prevailed during what was a tremendous first ninety-minute portion of the show.
