3. Ric Flair Vs. Big Show - ECW Championship (11 July 2006)
In the summer of 2006, Ric Flair was in the midst of a heated rivalry with Mick Foley that would culminate in an "I Quit" match at SummerSlam 2006. However, before he got there, 'Naitch' looked to prove just how hardcore he was by challenging Big Show for the ECW Championship.
If that sounds a tad insane, it's because it was. Ric Flair was the complete antithesis of ECW, yet it also made all the sense in the world. 'The Nature Boy' was no stranger to blood and violence; in fact, Naitch got more colour in one 2005 promo than the entire PG era combined. If anything, Flair was custom made for the extreme.
Show and Flair really did go above and beyond the call of duty in this bout. Intent on proving that the new ECW lived up to the extreme name, the giant and the legend threw caution to the wind and rode the wave of blood, barbed wire and thumb tacks to create a rare, unexpected classic from the revived brand.
The battle between 'The Dirtiest Player in the Game' and 'The Extreme Giant' made for great TV and, no matter how unlikely it seemed, the action genuinely sucked you into the story, and had the fans believing that 'Slick Ric' could well walk out a 17 time World Champ.
