Tasked with getting a brand new (and soon-abandoned) concept over to the masses at the September 2008 B-show, ECW Champion Mark Henry's failed effort to retain his Championship in unfavourable circumstances promoted the drama potentially possible in battles for belts that actually mattered. Matt Hardy being the one to actually profit from the battle nearly managed that, too.

ECW Champion Hardy was the type of titleholder that could actually do something with the troubled title. His feuds with the young and the restless on the freewheeling C-show were largely enjoyable, and the desperation he exhibited in the closing stretch of the 'Scramble' multi-man match just to even win the title immediately made it feel somewhat important.

Though the ECW Championship wasn't on even-footing with the WWE/World Titles on the main show, it was a singles title beyond the secondary straps Hardy could at long last boast about. Brilliantly booked and really well-worked, Hardy's journey from being the first man in the 20-minute match to being the one to stumble away as the winner was equal parts intriguing and thrilling to watch.
