10 Best Modern WWE Rivalries

4.  Brock Lesnar Vs. Goldberg

The WCW veterans return to the company came as a huge surprise to fans, and one that was treated with trepidation. Although Goldberg was a genuine star, his last run with WWE was dire, and since then he'd been out of the wrestling game altogether. The return was questioned even further when it was made clear that he'd be feuding with Lesnar, the man he'd infamously fought in a Wrestlemania event that bombed massively.

However, the booking for this set of matches was not only some of the best work we've seen from either performer but at the time was the absolute talking point of the industry.

To see Lesnar be torn down by Goldberg in 86 seconds at Survivor Series compellingly altered company narrative. As a character for the last few years he had felt stale because he never faced conflict. The nature of building him to look undefeatable dragged away any semblance of consequence for the performer and makes his matches seem formulaic.

Contrasting this and making him need to fight, culminating in a war at Wrestlemania where even the building itself suffered, was everything he needed to become interesting again as it gave Lesnar a drive to remain relevant up against such a powerful foe. This made the feud must see as it genuinely questioned everything we'd known of Lesnar.

It goes to show that sometimes match quality and running time isn't the only thing needed to make a feud work, sometimes you just need star power.
