As early as 2012, Dolph Ziggler was considered a talented but underutilized star. His feud with CM Punk produced some great matches, but they were designed to help get Punk over and did nothing for Dolph in the long run. At WrestleMania 28, "The Showoff" was simply part of a 12-man tag team match.

Dolph qualified for the World Heavyweight Championship Money in the Bank match at the 2012 Pay-Per-View, but most expected that Cody Rhodes would end up leaving with the briefcase. Vickie Guerrero prevented that from happening though, and Dolph weathered a beating to end up claiming the contract.

The next several months were a mixed bag for Dolph. He ended his association with Vickie Guerrero, formed alliances with Big E and AJ Lee, and even successfully retained his briefcase in a ladder match against John Cena at TLC 2012, but at the same time, "The Showoff" was made to look like a fool when he repeatedly tried to cash in his briefcase, but was laid out by whomever held the title before his attempts would begin.

At WrestleMania 29, Dolph and Big E made an unsuccessful run at Team Hell No's WWE Tag Team Titles while Alberto Del Rio retained the World Heavyweight Championship over Jack Swagger. The following evening, Del Rio defeated Swagger and Zeb Colter in a handicap match, but he wasn't out of the woods. Dolph's music hit, and even though the same thing had happened many times before, the fans popped like crazy.

They must have sensed something was different. This time, Dolph officially cashed in and the match began. One Zig Zag later, the popular star won the World Heavyweight Title, wrapping up one of the wildest moments in the history of Raw.
