10 Best nWo Moments

5. Paid For By The New World Order

In 1996, wrestling interviews were still traditionally shot in the ring, or backstage with an announcer close by. So when the nWo aired their own commercials on TV, it looked like nothing the business had seen at that point. If you look back at the promos now, they feel a bit ancient, but at the time they were groundbreaking.

The first video featured Hogan, Hall and Nash talking trash about WCW, and laying out their plans for domination of the wrestling world. It was built around a bunch of jump cuts, sound bites, and non-sequiturs (“Wadda ya bench Lex? Wadda ya bench?”) all wrapped in black and white colours. The iconic theme song played in the background, as the villains instantly became the coolest act in the business.

The wrestling world was further put on notice that things were changing with those promos, and the New World Order was at the forefront of that movement in almost every way.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
