10 Best Old School WWE Cage Matches
3. Hulk Hogan Vs. The Big Boss Man (Madison Square Garden, 1989)
The WWF cage match had traditionally been the setting for the feud-ending clashes of the company's top star. As Hulk Hogan was the biggest star in the whole of wrestling in the '80s, it meant that he dominated the early years of the blue-barred cage.
This match from the spring of 1989 is not as famous as the near-carbon copy they two produced a few weeks later on Saturday Night's Main Event, but it's worth a look for a few reasons.
Firstly, it still contains the impressive high spot of Hogan superplexing a shirt-splitting Boss Man from outside the cage back into the ring. As it was for the Madison Square Garden audience and not the sponsor-pleasing NBC audience of Saturday Night's Main Event, there is blood here, with the Big Boss Man getting a crimson mask from the blue bars. The crowd are also electric throughout the whole match, making a deafening noise and reacting to even the smallest slices of action like it's the greatest thing they have ever seen. And finally, it's Tony Schiavone's favourite match he has ever called, and he got to commentate on Steve McMichael's whole career. So that's high praise.
