10 Best Old School WWE Cage Matches
2. Hulk Hogan Vs. 'Mr. Wonderful' Paul Orndorff (Saturday Night's Main Event, 1987)
Despite beginning because the Hulkster didn't answer a phone call, the Hulk Hogan-Paul Orndorff feud was one of the biggest money-spinning disputes in wrestling history. This cage match, broadcast on the first Saturday Night's Main Event of 1987 to a record 10.6 TV rating, was the end of their run and featured one of the most famous non-finishes in WWE history.
After beating each other about the cage for a few minutes, both Hogan and Orndorff began to climb over the structure. On opposite sides, both men dropped down to the floor at the same time. Confusion reigned as the show went to commercial, viewers hooked as to what the result would be. Eventually, referee Joey Marella ordered the match to continue, as there had to be a clear winner. Hogan would then steamroll to victory and towards breaking records with Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III.
It has since emerged that part of the reason for the non-finish twist was to give 'Mr. Wonderful' a storyline reason to challenge Hogan at 'Mania III, in case Andre vetoed his suggested heel turn. Although that never happened, the match and angle remains one of the highlights of WWE's first golden era.
