WWE: 10 Best Pre-Match Promos Ever

4. Randy Orton Vs Cactus Jack At Backlash 2004

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOGDIyUVraM Back in 2004, Randy Orton was in his "Legend Killer" gimmick as a member of Evolution. The gimmick was gaining some weight, as he constantly disrespected and squashed legends like Sgt Slaughter and Harley Race, but in order for Randy to really get over as a legitimate contender, he needed to win decisively in his own right, without the help of his stablemates. More importantly, he needed to look good while doing it. Enter everyone's favourite teddy bear, Mick Foley. Orton had targeted Foley for close to a year, beating him down, spitting on him and calling him out as a coward and his bitch, while Mick would not be drawn in. He finally confronted Randy, and despite being initially unsuccessful, managed to provoke him into a Hardcore match at Backlash. From then, the mood of the video changes, and in between footage of Foley's most violent moments, often grainy or in black and white, we see Foley himself going back and forth in a rocking chair, holding a package. We get to see him slowly talking himself back into his Cactus Jack mindset, how he felt about the pain that he casually inflicted on his opponents. Finally, we see him taking out his barbed wire baseball bat and trashing the set, screaming about all the things he's going to do to Orton, and how much he'll love it. Foley is quite possibly the best there is at incorporating psychology into his promos in order to make himself look crazy. Combined with the stock footage of Cactus Jack wreaking havoc in the past, fans knew that Orton had finally pushed Mick too far and was about to get the beating of his young life. The angle was so successful that Foley later repeated it in his feud with Edge in 2006, but it didn't have the same power that it did here.
