6. MJF Cuts The Babyface Promo Of The Year

Having established himself as the most effective heel in the company, it was natural to pair MJF up with returning babyface hero CM Punk for a feud. Plus as MJF would later say:

“Every time I come out here, I am not expected to hit home runs, I’m expected to hit grand slams,”

So, it was no real surprise that he managed some memorably entertaining exchanges against one of the few talents that can match him on the mic.

The real curveball was the time Maxwell, in the face of Punk’s dog collar challenge, was left speechless for the first time at least in his AEW career, if not ever. The following week, “The Salt Of The Earth” reached far back into his own childhood to recount the tale of a lonely, bullied kid, abandoned by the hero he thought he could count on. Going on to explain how that kid had slogged his guts out to carve out a wrestling career anyway.

Of course the whole thing was self-serving and an excuse to bash Punk some more. Plus it turned out to be a characteristically devilish ruse to get into CM Punk’s head, only to kick him in the balls. Nevertheless, for one night only, the best heel in the company gave us a glimpse of his potential to one day be its biggest babyface hero.
