It had to be.

Johnny and Tommaso are two wrestlers who's careers will forever be intertwined. As mentioned earlier, they were an incredibly popular tag team act in NXT, capturing the NXT Tag Team Championships as beloved babyfaces.

That all changed at NXT TakeOver: Chicago, after #DIY failed to re-capture their tag titles from Authors of Pain. As the show was ending, Ciampa finally snapped, attacking Johnny and breaking up #DIY in brutal fashion.

Ciampa then spent almost a year out with injury, during which time Gargano went on a quest for redemption, even scoring an NXT title match against Andrade "Cien" Almas.

Ciampa then returned from injury and he and Gargano had a trilogy of incredible, brutal and awe-inspiring matches. During this time, Ciampa only went and won the NXT Championship too.

Gargano then started to embrace his dark side, going to extreme lengths to take the title away from Ciampa. This culminated when Gargano took out Aleister Black ahead of a planned triple threat between all three men ahead of TakeOver: Brooklyn IV.

Over the following months, Gargano turned more and more to the dark side, even reuniting with Ciampa to take out Black on an episode of NXT TV.

If this sounds like a lot, that's because it is. This story has had so many amazing twists and turns and it's still not over. The story of Johnny and Tommaso rages on in NXT and seemingly has no end in sight. Which is not a bad thing at all.

The perfect example of long-term storytelling in wrestling, Gargano vs Ciampa has to be one of WWE's greatest ever feuds, let alone NXT's.
