It's a deadly game! That we play as we live our liiiiiiives.

The 1998 Survivor Series was home to the Deadly Game, a one night tournament to fill the vacant WWE Championship. It was stocked with the biggest stars of the Attitude Era and also the Real Man's Man denim cutoffs version of William Regal, but it was The Rock’s night.

Rock started off the evening by winning what, by definition, would have to be the shortest official pinfall victory in WWE history when he rolled up Big Boss Man just as the bell rang to earn the win in exactly three seconds. He then defeated his old IC title rival Ken Shamrock in round two.

In Round 3, Rock came up against a somewhat stiffer challenge: The Undertaker. Rock and Undertaker brawled inside and outside the ring for several minutes until Kane appeared (through fire and brimstone) to disqualify his brother, who'd beaten him in the previous round.

In the finals, Rock faced Mankind, and they basically just set to work murdering each other. It doesn't approach the genuinely cringeworthy brutality of the infamous “I Quit” match that followed it, but that just means that the unprotected chair shots (and years taken off Foley’s life) number in the single digits.

After all of that, Rock got the cheapest win possible (a Montreal Screwjob reenactment) and simultaneously became WWE Champion and the most hated man in wrestling.
