For a brief period in the early 2000s, WWE got rid of both the Intercontinental and United States Championships. Thankfully, cooler heads soon prevailed - the Intercontinental Championship came back to Raw, and the U.S. Title (which was absorbed into the IC Title after the Invasion ended) was brought to Smackdown.

While Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar feuded over the WWE Championship, eight of the other great workers on the show (well, seven and Billy Gunn) were put into a tournament for the U.S. Title. It came down to Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero, close friends who were recognized as two of the best workers in the promotion.

Benoit and Guerrero opened Vengeance 2003 with a great back-and-forth wrestling match that really put over the importance of the belt. After more than 20 minutes, neither man could put the other away - but Rhyno, who used to team with Benoit, came down during a ref bump and Gored his former partner. After that, Guerrero hit the Frog Splash and got the pin.
