On the Raw immediately following WrestleMania XXX, Paige made her main roster debut, challenging AJ Lee in an impromptu match for the WWE Divas' Championship and winning it. However, given that Paige was also the reigning NXT Women's Champion and had joined the main roster, that title was vacated.

An eight-woman tournament was held for the belt, featuring competitors of varying skill levels (for instance, Sasha Banks, Aksana, Bayley, and Alicia Fox were all part of it). In the end, it came down to Charlotte versus Natalya.

The two women faced off at NXT TakeOver, the second live NXT special on the WWE Network. As Bret Hart and Ric Flair watched on, the two grapplers had what many felt was the best women's match in WWE history at the time. Charlotte managed to reverse the Sharpshooter into the Figure Eight, but Natalya escaped. Charlotte then used Natalya's own Sharpshooter against her, but Natalya escaped again. Finally, Charlotte hit Natural Selection for the pinfall, claiming the first title of her career.
