A rivalry that wrote itself, Cena and Styles gave everyone a match of the year contender on the very first WWE pay-per-view of 2017.

Two of the most iconic wrestlers of their generation - one an icon of mainstream wrestling success, the other of the independent scene that had flourished during the other's time on top - had put on some of the best matches of 2016 in WWE.

Styles had defeated Cena twice in singles action, including cleanly at SummerSlam. After this, AJ captured the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose, whilst Cena took some time away from WWE. When John returned, the stage was set for a showdown of epic proportions.

Naturally, the two had an incredible match. They played off spots from their previous encounters, whilst adding new elements to the match, keeping the story fresh and reminding the crowd of how they got here all at once.

The match really has to be watched to understand the full spectacle of it, but the final spot of the bout pretty much sums it up - Cena hit an Attitude Adjustment onto Styles, but rolled through to hoist Styles up onto his shoulders for a second AA, which was finally enough to end the match and for Cena to vanquish Styles for good.

Oh, and did we mention this win tied John Cena with Ric Flair for the most world championships in a wrestling career?
