10 Best WrestleMania Rematches That Ever Happened At Backlash
4. Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle (Backlash 2001)
It is a sign of the top-to-bottom quality of WrestleMania X-7 that it featured the first pay-per-view singles match between Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle and the encounter usually doesn't make the top three of best matches on the show. Two of the most technically-gifted wrestlers of all time, the Olympic Hero and the Rabid Wolverine had a tremendous match that, whilst of a high quality, could not compare to the storyline drama of Vince vs. Shane McMahon, the daredevil nature of the second TLC match, or the era-defining Rock vs. Steve Austin main event.
Benoit and Angle had a chance to correct that the following month at Backlash, and did so in a technically flawless 30-minute Ultimate Submission match. On this occasion, the rivals stole the show, putting on a much better bout than the other X-7 rematch, the shenanigans-filled Chris Jericho vs. William Regal Duchess of Queensbury clash. Demonstrating their vast array of submission manoeuvres, the duo had racked up three submissions each by the time the time-limit expired. Wanting a winner, the referee sent the match into overtime, with Benoit shortly after making Angle tap to the Crippler Crossface.
The two would have another match the following month at Judgment Day, before later having a classic at Royal Rumble 2003. This WrestleMania rematch was a definite improvement on their first clash at WrestleMania, following the pattern of every match between the pair being better than the last.
