Mick Foley's first WWE Championship win remains one of the greatest feel-good moments in the history of the company. Years before Daniel Bryan conquered the world at WrestleMania XXX or CM Punk fled Chicago with the title, Foley was the star who wasn't supposed to make it, but who reached the top via hard work and fan support.

Prior to becoming WWE Champion, Foley held numerous tag titles and was the inaugural Hardcore Champion, but the Intercontinental Title eluded him. Just two months before he won the big one, Mankind challenged Ken Shamrock for the Intercontinental Title at Judgment Day. That match saw the beloved star trapped in the Ankle Lock for so long that, refusing to tap out, he rendered himself unconscious with the Mandible Claw.

Better remembered, though, is the challenge Foley mustered years later, after his official retirement. A disrespectful Randy Orton managed to goad Foley into a hardcore match at Backlash 2004, putting his Intercontinental Title on the line. Much like Foley did for Triple H, he took a beating to create a new star, coming up short in his attempt to win the prestigious belt.
