Many years before "Broken" Matt Hardy became one of the hottest stars in wrestling, he was tapped as a future main-event player in WWE. Unfortunately, it just never panned out - he was part of the successful Hardy Boyz tandem, but his brother Jeff was the flashier member of the team and eventually became a true superstar.

Matt had his singles success in WWE - he held the revived ECW Championship, the U.S. Championship, the Cruiserweight Championship, and more - but never the Intercontinental Championship. It didn't help matters that he spent much of the original brand split on Smackdown, a time in which the blue brand boasted the U.S. Title, but even before the split, Hardy was picking up singles titles.

In 2009, the IC Title came to Smackdown, where Hardy finally got a chance to contend for it. He feuded with then-champion Drew McIntyre, but the preferential treatment that McIntyre got from Vince McMahon ensured that he retained the belt throughout the program.
