Hero has just returned to NXT after a career-rebuilding stint on the independent scene but it was arguably his run in ROH alongside Claudio Castagnoli as the Kings of Wrestling that made him a major household name in the first place. This showed that Hero was more than capable of being a major player in the company yet is still didn't lead to a ROH World Championship reign.

At the beginning of his ROH career it was argued that Hero's character was simply too light-hearted to be considered world champion material, but the quality of his matches alongside added edges all but made that argument null and void. Others also said that he was best suited in the tag division, but prevailing wisdom suggests that Hero never won the ROH World Championship because he simply didn't need to.

Hero consistently proved to be an excellent challenger to new champions and despite challenging Homicide, Jerry Lynn, Tyler Black, Bryan Danielson, Eddie Edwards and more for the title Hero never managed to succeed. In many ways Hero was a gatekeeper for ROH.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
