10 Best Wrestling Gimmick Changes Of 2016

6. Abyss

The Decay - TNA Tag Team Champions
Impact Wrestling

In 2016 Abyss joined that rarest of professional wrestling clubs; he removed his mask and became all the better for it. A number of folk raised their eyebrows when the TNA original sided with Crazzy Steve (so crazy, so many z's) and Rosemary as Decay, but as the year trundles towards its climax it is difficult to argue with the change being anything other than a total success for the monster.

It wasn't the first time Abyss had joined up with a stable of lost souls. Heck, it was the second time in two years he'd decided to do that. Still, Decay has ended being a much bigger success than James Storm's Revolution ever was, a seven-month tag title reign being the highlight.

Abyss has reinvented himself in 2016 by finally coming to terms with his role. Rather than being the singles centrepiece of an issue Abyss' role is to be an imposing monster within a group, within a bigger hole. The 2016 change may well have seen his career extended.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
