10 Best Wrestling Matches Of The Week (Aug 7)

1. Michael Elgin Vs. Kenny Omega (NJPW G1 Climax, 30 July)

Michael Elgin Kenny Omega
NJPW

In a word, this was spectacular. We've seen current IWGP Intercontinental Champion Michael Elgin and Kenny Omega battle on a number of occasions this year, but for me this was their best bout to date. Maybe it was because it was free of any title ramifications, maybe it was Omega's more focused and serious nature in the tournament, who knows?

Whatever it was, this match truly is a must-see. From the moment Omega dived over the ropes onto Elgin (who was dealing with Yujiro Takahashi at the time), this was 100mph balls-to-the-wall goodness. If there are two gaijins more in tune with wrestling in Japan, I don't know of them.

As usual with these two, the final five minutes of this were quite frankly astounding. They stole each other's finishing moves and brought the kitchen sink into play, but neither man was willing to stay down. This was Japanese fighting spirit told through a modern Canadian lens, and it was fantastic.

#BigMike pulled out the win after a brutal lariat/Elgin Bomb combination. Go out of your way to see this match.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
