10 Best Wrestling Referees Ever

6. Mark Curtis

The first WCW referee to feature on the list, Mark Curtis was the gimmick name of Brian Hildebrand, one of the most respected and beloved individuals in all of professional wrestling.

Hildebrand was diagnosed with stomach and bowel cancer in 1997, and would fight the disease for two years before passing away in 1999.

As a referee, Mark Curtis was responsible for one of the most memorable referee moments in WCW history. In 1997, just one month before his diagnosis, Curtis was refereeing a match between Psychosis and this writer's personal favourite wrestler, Dean Malenko. For whatever reason, a fan attempted to make his way into the ring, possibly to ask Malenko about one of his thousand holds.

Before he could ask any questions, the foolish fan received a knee to the gob, which was quickly followed by a tightly-applied guillotine choke. After Malenko and Psychosis both got a couple of boots in, security came down and apprehended the chump. This incident earned Curtis the nickname 'The Shooter'.

It also earned him 6th spot on this list.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
