Hell In A Cell's debut is one of the most significant matches in WWE history, and set an incredibly high bar for everything that followed. Awarded a perfect five-star rating by the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer, it saw the duo locked inside the imposing structure as a means of keeping Michaels' allies from interfering, as they'd continually done throughout their feud. It succeeded in repelling Triple H, Rick Rude, and Chyna, but not the company's new dominant force.

After a months-long build, this was the night Kane finally showed up to enact vengeance on his brother. His debut in this match remains the most iconic in WWE history, as he tore the cell door from its hinges, summoned hellfire, and downed 'The Phenom' with a Tombstone Piledriver.

Such a moment would have completely overshadowed a lesser match, but Michaels vs. 'Taker was exemplary. It told the story of Shawn seemingly digging his own grave, having antagonised his rival to the point where such a barbaric stipulation was deemed the only fitting conclusion, and he took an absolute pasting until Kane's grand arrival, weaselling his way to Cell survival.
