3. CM Punk Vs. Brock Lesnar (SummerSlam 2013)
Though John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan closed SummerSlam 2013 in stunning fashion, CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar was the event’s true highlight. Their brutal No Disqualification match stands as one of the best of either man’s career. It was a tremendous David vs. Goliath battle that brought plenty of weapon spots without sacrificing psychology and storytelling, and very much delivered on the hype leading up to the event.
The contest pitted Punk’s cunning and intelligence against Brock’s brute force, with Lesnar manhandling his opponent throughout. They both worked incredibly stiff, with Punk landing some particularly nasty knee strikes towards the end, and while Paul Heyman was heavily involved in the conclusion, nothing could detract from the action that had just unfolded between the ropes.
Punk ultimately failed in his quest, but he gave as good as he got. The underdog almost had Lesnar defeated on several occasions, with the closest near-fall coming from a chair-assisted elbow drop, but he became too distracted by Heyman, and Brock destroyed him with some savage chairshots, before finishing him off with one last F5 on the chair. Punk left with his head held high, however, and was given a standing ovation following his performance in this 30-minute epic.
