10 Best WWE Matches That Ever Happened In July

2. WWE Championship: The Rock Vs. The Undertaker Vs. Kurt Angle - Vengeance 2002

The Undertaker walked into this one as the Undisputed Champion while The Rock was back in WWE after taking a few months off for a movie. Angle was arguably the best wrestler in the company even though it was only his third year on the main roster. It's one of those matches where I'll never forget how funny it was right at the beginning. It was not a comedy match by any means, but they had an entertaining beginning with Rock & Undertaker talking trash while Angle was in the background as if he was some kid trying to get them to notice him. Then they went after Angle together. This is one of those triple threat matches that set the standard for so many triple threat matches that would follow it. There were parts of the match where they were stealing each other's moves (Undertaker doing the Angle Slam was great) and so many instances where they kicked out of nearfalls or had the other guy make the save. There were times when all three guys looked like they were going to win. It was too close to call. Angle had a flurry of offense where it seemed like it would be him. Then Undertaker nailed Rock with a Last Ride Powerbomb and looked like he had it. Every time somebody had a nearfall or near submission the crowd went wild. They bought into all the nearfalls. The best one was probably when The Rock hit a Rock Bottom and Undertaker kicked out without Angle breaking it up. It was so close. Moments later, The Rock hit the Rock Bottom on Angle and that was enough for the win since Undertaker couldn't break up the pin. It was a thunderous ovation as The Rock won this 20 minute battle. It was a match that three midcarders couldn't do at that level. What made it work so well was because these three guys were the top guys in the company that fans were so familiar with. We bought into everything they did because we saw all of them win so many big matches in their career. All the nearfalls are believable when you have three individuals as talented as these men. When the match took place it was hard to know who would win since the winner would face Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Whoever it was would be facing Lesnar for the first time, so it was hard to know who it might be. Rock was the only one that was a babyface so that's why it was him. The Rock's reign lasted only one month because he dropped it to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.
