In 1997, WWF decided to introduce another singles title into the mix and with this, the European Championship was born. Synonymous with D-Lo Brown, HHH, and Eddie Guerrero, the title's first holder was the most popular European wrestler on WWF’s roster at the time, The British Bulldog, who captured the gold, quite fittingly in Europe as he defeated a member of his family in the tournament finals.

As mistrust between the brothers-in-law grew over the months - starting with Owen eliminating Bulldog from the Royal Rumble, destiny pulled the two together in the final of the European Title tournament, held at a house show in Berlin, Germany. The match was exactly what fans expected. The wily Owen using speed and guile to evade the powerful - yet equally quick Bulldog and Davey Boy using his trademark strength.

When The Bulldog was on form, he could really bring the best out of anyone and Owen turned on the style in a classic barely seen in full at the time.
