10 Best WWE Money In The Bank PPV Matches (That Aren't MITB)
7. AJ Styles Vs. John Cena - Money In The Bank 2016
The concept of John Cena vs AJ Styles felt impossible a year before this match happened, having the definitive WWE star of the past 15 years versus TNA's greatest superstar on a PPV for over 20 minutes was something that didn't feel real until the bell rang.
The aura around this contest was truly unique as even fans unfamiliar with Styles' eclectic history were transfixed by the opening action. The in-ring work almost wouldn't have mattered, since the concept of these two together would have likely been enough to carry minimal effort, but both men put in fantastic performances.
This match was a great introduction for their feud, the work they did here and in the tag match at Battleground afterwards helped both men feel each other out and develop the awesome matches they'd have in the future at SummerSlam and the Royal Rumble. The interference finish still feels deflating, but the knowledge of the genius work they'd give each other in the immediate future softens the blow.
On this rewatch, it was melancholic to realise that this was one of the most important moments of The Club's WWE run, where they felt like a force that could have shifted their division. At least they had this night.
