After the horrifying decision to have Christian drop his first WWE World Title to Randy Orton days after he won it, and the subsequent Christian heel turn against a main eventer who didn’t need a title run, these men created something awesome.

Christian is one of the most brilliant wrestling minds alive, a perpetually underrated performer who could do anything, and helped structure an ingenious match.

This remains one of the few occasions that natural heel Orton has worked as a babyface because the narrative is built around the innate anger that makes him so captivating. He’ll lose the belt if he gets disqualified here, so Christian’s oscillating constantly between trying to defeat Orton with his wrestling abilities, and trying to infuriate him into throwing away his belt. Orton’s notorious backstage/narrative anger issues made a terrible stipulation of “if the babyface gets disqualified he loses his belt” melodramatic genius.

While it helps that Orton’s never had better chemistry with anyone than Christian, their exchanges are sublime. Orton’s facial expressions when on the verge of snapping are phenomenal, and the beatdown he unleashes on Christian after he gets disqualified is sadistic. It managed to do a Dusty finish to carry on a feud in the perfect way, got both men over, and sparked interest in what happened next.
