The Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian helped revolutionise tag team wrestling during the Attitude Era's later years. Their long series of breathless spotfests brought the division to a level of prominence it hadn't experienced in decades, particularly when the Dudley Boyz were eventually brought into the mix, and this all-action ladder match helped lay the foundations.

It was the fifth and final clash in the ongoing Terri Invitational Tournament, with Runnels' managerial services and a $100,000 cash prize on the line. There were other stakes, too. Gangrel, The Brood's mastermind, had turned on Edge & Christian a few months prior, linking up with Matt and Jeff Hardy in the process, though he was ejected from ringside after carrying a ladder to the ring early on.

Though lacking in the crazy stunts that would characterise later bouts involving these teams, this clash stands the test of time. The four participants rarely paused for breath, resulting in a contest that was just as chaotic as you'd expect, with Jeff eventually shoving Edge off a ladder for the victory. The storyline became one of mutual respect thereafter, but turned nasty again in 2000, resulting in the long-running series of Tag Team Title encounters that helped make them famous.
