On one hand, this match shouldn’t have happened in the way it did. Being set up through the previous week’s 60 Minute Iron Man Fatal 4 Way match ending with a draw so people can watch next week? A terrible way to get NXT audiences continuously invested in weekly television. However, on the other hand, two of the best champions in NXT history had an electrifying championship match, ending with the Prince’s rebirth as NXT Champion after four years without that gold belt around his waist.

The match was fantastic, delivering on the potential they showed in their NXT title contest last year, working a babyface versus babyface style match that worked. Bálor showed his impressive physicality, demonstrating just how much better he’s gotten since returning to the black and yellow brand, but Cole really stood out here.

Not relying on any of his traditional heel characteristics, the Undisputed Era leader put on a towering good guy performance, working as hard as he could to believably sell the desperation to win his championship back. In the end, Bálor’s second coronation felt monumental, a reward for a man who never got his proper world title reign on the main roster.
