3. Stone Cold's Deal With The Devil (WrestleMania X-Seven)

Jim Ross seemed to succinctly capture the mood of the entire WWE fanbase when he screamed "what the Hell is this?" down his headset over and over again after watching Stone Cold pin The Rock at WrestleMania X-Seven.

By shaking hands with Vince McMahon (or, as JR, described it, "shaking hands with the devil himself") after the final bell, Austin removed any doubt about what we had just seen: a fully-fledged heel turn, his first in more than four years. But questions remained about his motive.

It wasn't until the following night, on Monday Night Raw, that we got anything approaching an explanation. The Texas Rattlesnake was essentially just miffed at what he perceived to be a lack of respect from the fans (apparently being the most beloved wrestler in history wasn't enough for him).

An unsatisfying resolution that may have been, but there's no denying that you went to bed on 1 April 2001 desperate to see what it all meant. Did Vince have some dirt on his franchise player? Was Austin cozying up to the powers that be for his own ends? Was it all just an elaborate April Fool's joke?
