10 Best WWE PPV Matches That Ever Happened In September

1. Shawn Michaels Vs. Mankind - WWE Title (In Your House: Mind Games 1996)

It's a match that didn't have that much build up to it and they didn't have a lot of matches together, but it's the best WWE PPV match in the month of September. When babyface WWE Champion Shawn Michaels took on the heel Mankind, who had just aligned himself with Paul Bearer, they put on a match that was an example of why fans love both wrestlers. They always found a way to put on different styles of matches depending on their opponents. It was no different at Mind Games 1996. They had such a unique match because they did some innovative spots. Mankind did his usual insane bumps like when Michaels slammed him headfirst on the floor outside the ring. Then there was the time when Michaels gave him a suplex onto the steel steps with Mankind's feet hitting the steps. That led to Michaels working over the legs of Mankind, which gave the match a sense of pyschology. It wasn't just some spot fest with two crazy bumpers. Michaels even used a steel chair to the hand of Mankind to prevent his Mandible Claw finisher. Their big spot towards the end of the match was when Mankind gave Michaels a back body drop off the middle turnbuckle outside the ring and they went crashing through a table although Michaels turned to land on top of him. It was a huge move especially in 1996 when we didn't see those kinds of spots very often. The negative part about the match was the finish. Michaels gave Mankind a Superkick into a chair that looked like it knocked him out. He slowly made the cover, but then he went after Vader for the DQ finish. Others got involved like Sid and The Undertaker, who popped out of a casket to go after Mankind. What's interesting about the finish is that there were reports that Mankind was going to win the WWE Title here. Michaels had rep for changing finishes if he didn't want to put somebody over. Not sure if that's what happened in this case. Mankind was still pretty new, so maybe WWE failed to pull the trigger for that reason. Two months after this Michaels dropped the WWE Title to Sid. It's a shame that Michaels didn't have more matches with Mankind. They were the perfect match for each other because they were willing to put their bodies on the line. This was their first major match and they were able to perform at such a high level. WWE really should have given them a chance to have other matches because they likely could have improved on this one, which was absolutely fantastic.
