10 Best WWE PPV Matches That Ever Happened In September
8. Kurt Angle vs. Steve Austin - WWE Championship (Unforgiven 2001)
Any time Kurt Angle wrestled Steve Austin it was a great match. They had a natural chemistry together, which is why they wrestled so many times in 2001. It was one of those things where they matched up an old school brawler type wrestler like Austin with a technical wrestler that was an amazing athlete like Angle and they just made it work. Following their outstanding match at SummerSlam 2001, Austin was the heel WWE Champion while Angle was the babyface for the first time in his career that did an awesome job of making Austin's life difficult. They also had some added elements in this match because Angle was in his hometown of Pittsburgh and it was 12 days after the September 11 tragedy. They had an entertaining battle with Austin dominating for much of it, but when Angle came back the crowd in Pittsburgh went crazy. There's also something special in the air when somebody is in their hometown and that was the case for Angle as well. Each guy stole the finishers of the other man and were able to kick out. When Austin looked like he was going to be able to finish off Angle with the Stunner, Angle grabbed the foot and the crowd went wild. Austin tried to fight it, but eventually he tapped out while his other hand was under the bottom rope. When Angle won the gold there was a big celebration for him. It was done because the heel Alliance story was dominating WWE, so it was the kind of feel good moment that everybody wanted. Austin ended up winning the WWE Title back within a few weeks, but when Angle won it really was seen as a major moment.
