5. Headstrong - Trapt (Badd Blood 2003)

For those younglings born after the early days of the new millennium, Trapt’s Headstrong and its video can be seen as a window into the year 2002. A distilled example of the shifting trends in music at the time, it showcases the ever present formula of four piece rock band rebelling against an overblown threat of self-imposed oppression or, failing that, a woman.

Headstrong went on to become quite successful, even entering the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 in the US and climbing to No. 4. WWE soon came calling and used the song for Badd Blood 2003. If you’re sitting there saying “what one was that again?” then you’re probably not alone.

For those in need of a quick memory jolt, the main event saw Triple H and Kevin Nash square off in Hell in a Cell whilst Chris Jericho took on Goldberg, and in a precursor to their WrestleMania XXIV match, Shawn Michaels wrestled Ric Flair.

With a card that didn’t scream passion and intensity, Headstrong worked wonders to project an atmosphere of fierce competition. The song’s erratic drumbeat and thumping chorus hit like a speeding quarterback whilst the simplistic lyrics lend themselves to the no nonsense nature of professional wrestling.
