10 Best WWE Title Matches In SummerSlam History

6. John Cena vs. Chris Jericho (2005)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrhzqnYg3Nc From the day he debuted, fans could easily tell John Cena was being bred for the big time in WWE. I mean, he went one-on-one with Kurt Angle of all people in his first ever televised match. From enhancement talent to tag team competitor to United States champion, Cena had a proper buildup on SmackDown from 2002 to 2005, regardless of what you may think of him. Even when he unseated the long reigning JBL as WWE champion at WrestleMania 21, many people still weren't convinced Cena was the next €œguy.€ Cena moved over to the Raw brand in June 2005 where immediately began feuding with Chris Jericho and Christian over the WWE title. Once Christian was drafted to SmackDown after Vengeance and it came down to Cena and Jericho, their rivalry really began to intensify. It was a well known fact by the summer time that Jericho was on his way out of the company, but if he was going to leave, Jericho was going to ensure that he left in style. With his intentions to depart WWE common knowledge, many fans figured there was no chance he'd be winning the strap from Cena. Keep in mind that this was the first time Jericho had been involved in a top-tier storyline for the world title in nearly three years, so to see him in the main event felt refreshing, especially against an individual he help put on the map in 2002. Jericho had fans doubting themselves as to whether he'd be winning the strap one last time before he left came around, adding excitement to their pending SummerSlam encounter. At the biggest party of the summer, the two had a great match that saw Cena come out on top with his title reign intact. It was believed to be his final WWE match, but he'd compete against Cena in a rematch the next night on Raw before being €œfired€ by then-Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff. Jericho's feud with Cena would help legitimize the leader of the Cenation as a main event player in WWE. They'd revisit their rivalry many years later in 2008 over the World Heavyweight Championship. To this day Jericho is still looking for his first singles win over Cena.
